The History of the Gallovidians

In 1988 the remnants of Jimmy Wilson’s Durham Fiddlers along with other players, provided a concert in Dalbeattie.  At the supper following the concert it was suggested that the players might form a proper group with its own repertoire.  This received general accord  and subsequently  a number of the players assembled at Islesteps Village Hall and a group was formed under the title of “The Gallovidians”.   Our aims were to play mainly traditional music to provide pleasure for the membership and  to play at events to raise money for charities and good causes.   Over 31 years many thousands of pounds have been raised.

During our time The Gallovidians have played throughout Dumfries and Galloway and beyond including visits to other countries.   Although mainly fiddle players, accordionists and other string players have been with the group.

At concerts instrumental players, singers and other artistes take part.
